Ulyanovsk Vestas Factory Produces the 150th Wind Turbine Blade

6 Feb 2020

Vestas Manufacturing Rus performed the 150th wind turbine blade production ceremony at its production site in Ulyanovsk. The ceremony was attended by Igor Komarov, Plenipotentiary of the President of the Russian Federation in the Volga Federal District and Sergey Morozov, the Ulyanovsk region Governor.

The guests of the ceremony were invited to take a tour to the production area to observe composite blades manufacturing process with application of vacuum infusion technology, which uses fiberglass fabrics, carbon pultruded profiles and polymer binders. Each blade weighs 12.5 tons; its length is 62.5 m.

“Five years ago we established a new economic sector “from scratch”. We became pioneers of the Russian wind energy industry. By now, the only blade factory in our country Vestas in Ulyanovsk has already manufactured 150 blades. In the territory of the region, we have two wind farms with total capacity of 85 MW and now we are observing the wind energy component production localization. In parallel we provide qualified wind energy personnel training: in the Ulyanovsk State Technical University we have a special wind energy department,” – said Sergey Morozov.

Kimal Yusupov, Managing Director of Vestas in Russia, added: We have completed the Vestas technology transfer to the Ulyanovsk production site and reached serial production volume over the first operation year.  I am confident that this year we will be able to produce more than 250 blades and meet the growing demand of the Russian wind energy market”.

According to Makhmud Burikhanov, Managing Director for Investment Management of RUSNANO, unique competences in Ulyanovsk create a firm platform for support of RES 2.0 until 2035.

The Ulyanovsk nanocenter’s team actively participate in the wind energy industry development, which is new for our country.

The joint efforts of the RUSNANO group, Federal and local authorities and development institutions resulted in the creation of the first commercial wind farm in Ulyanovsk, Russia. Now such wind farms are being built all over the country – the renewable energy market is gaining momentum rapidly. The nanocenter and Ulyanovsk State Technical University jointly created a Wind Energy Technology Department.

Joint venture “Vestas Manufacturing Rus” was launched in December 2018. The company produces wind turbine composite blades unparalleled in Russia. The production is sited in the territory of aviation cluster in Ulyanovsk. The blades are designed for wind turbines with 3.6 MW to 4.2 MW capacity. By 2021, the annual output will reach 500 wind turbine blades. The volume of investments amounted to more than 2 billion rubles, 380 jobs were created. The company's participants are Vestas, RUSNANO, and the Ulyanovsk Region Investor Consortium, the part of which is Ulyanovsk nanocenter ULNANOTECH.

The Danish company Vestas is a global partner in the development of sustainable energy solutions. Vestas designs, manufactures, installs and maintains wind turbines around the world. The company's factories are located in Denmark, Germany, India, Italy, Romania, the United Kingdom, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Australia, China and the United States. The company was founded in 1898.
